What Shield boosts
Shield boosts three goalkeeper attribute groups: Kicking (KIC), Reflexes (REF), and Speed (SPD). It is the only keeper style that boosts Speed — the whole point is a keeper who plays like an eleventh outfielder: sweeping behind the defence, rushing duels, and pinging distribution. Note that goalkeeper styles only apply to goalkeepers. Compare it with the full list in our FC 27 chemistry styles guide before you commit.
How the boost scales with chemistry
The boost is not fixed — it scales with that player's own chemistry points (goalkeeper styles scale exactly the same way):
| Player chemistry | Shield boost |
| 0 chemistry | No boost at all |
| 1 chemistry | Small boost |
| 2 chemistry | Medium boost |
| 3 chemistry | Maximum boost (about +3 to Kicking, Reflexes, and Speed) |
A Shield on a 1-chemistry keeper is coins wasted. Use our FC 27 chemistry calculator to get the keeper to 3 chemistry first, then apply the style.
Best positions for Shield
- Goalkeeper (GK) behind a high defensive line: the sweeper-keeper profile — quick off his line to sweep through balls, fast enough to win races to them, and good with his feet to keep the attack moving.
Rule of thumb: Shield assumes your keeper leaves his box. If your defensive line sits deep and your keeper's job is shot-stopping, every group Shield boosts is solving a problem you don't have.
When NOT to pick Shield
Shield is a system pick — it only works if your tactics actually ask the keeper to sweep. Otherwise pick the rival:
- Pick Cat instead — for the aggressive 1v1 rusher: if your keeper's main job is charging out to win duels rather than distributing, Cat's Reflexes + Positioning is the sharper rushing toolkit. Shield wins only when kicking and distribution are part of the keeper's job too.
- Pick Glove instead — for traditional stay-on-line keepers: a keeper who holds his line needs Handling, Diving, and Positioning — not Speed. Shield on a shot-stopper is three boosted groups aimed at a role he never plays.
The honest test: does your keeper regularly touch the ball 25+ yards from goal? If yes, Shield. If he mostly lives in his six-yard box, you're buying Speed for a keeper who never sprints.
Example: Shield on a sweeper-keeper
Say you play a high line and your keeper is quick off his line but his distribution is shaky, and he sits on 3 chemistry. Applying Shield gives him the maximum Kicking + Reflexes + Speed boost (about +3 to each group): he reaches through balls a step earlier, reacts faster in the duels he rushes, and his long balls actually find teammates. Same keeper on 1 chemistry? Barely any boost — fix the chemistry first, because a sweeper-keeper at low chemistry is just a keeper caught out of position.
Shield FAQ
Shield or Cat for a sweeper keeper in FC 27?
Pick Shield when the keeper also has to distribute — Shield adds Kicking on top of Reflexes and Speed. Pick Cat for the pure aggressive 1v1 rusher, where Positioning matters more than kicking.
Do chemistry styles matter much for goalkeepers in FC 27?
They work exactly the same way — 0 chemistry means no boost, 3 chemistry means the maximum boost. But the community consensus is that keeper styles move the needle less than outfield styles, simply because keepers face fewer decisive moments per game. Get the chemistry right first; the style is the finishing touch.
When is Shield a wasted pick in FC 27?
On any keeper who stays on his line. Shield's Speed and Kicking boosts only pay off for a sweeper-keeper behind a high line — a traditional shot-stopper gets far more from Glove or Wall.
